Degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS) is a common condition amongst active large breed dogs with a complex aetiopathogenesis. Large-breed dogs, especially the German Shepherd (GSD), Retrievers and active or working dogs (Police, military or sporting dogs), are the most commonly affected by DLSS. Affected dogs are generally mature (mean age 5 1⁄2 years), and are predominantly heavier than 25 ...

Data collection forms were distributed to randomly selected GSD breeders and information so obtained was verified using East African Ken...

Young children (less than 11 years old) are a particular risk group for dog bites. Dog bites commonly occur from the family pet. Alsatian or alsatian mixes are the biggest group in the study causing dog bites. Alsations are a popular breed. By comparison Retrievers (Labrador and Golden), also a popular breed, caused few bites.

The seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) antibodies in dogs in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Nigeria, was determined using the Latex Aagglutination Test (LAT). Antibodies (LAT titer > 1:64) to T. gondii were found in 42 (25%) of the animals examined. Antibody titers in positive dogs ranged from 1:64 (15 dogs) to 1:2048 (3 dogs). There was a significant statistical difference...

A procedure for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of cyanide (HCN) in biological material using gas chromatography with thermoionic detection (NPD) and the headspace technique was proposed. The distribution of cyanides in individual organs was established in a group of experimental animals (Wistar strain rats, sacrificed due to termination of reproduction). The suitability of the techni...

A loss of genetic diversity may lead to increased disease risks in subpopulations of dogs. The canine breed structure has contributed to relatively small effective population size in many breeds and can limit the options for selective breeding strategies to maintain diversity. With the completion of the canine genome sequencing project, and the subsequent reduction in the cost of genotyping on ...
